I track our “Personal Savings Rate" (PSR) every year, starting in 2010, on the December entries using method #3 from here: https://www.choosefi.com/how-to-calculate-your-savings-rate/ 2010: 23.77% 2011: 18.86% 2012: 5.62% 2013: 5.41% 2014: 4.43% 2015: 2.33% 2016: 5.67% 2017: 5.79% 2018: 7.68% 2019: 18.57% 2020: 19.84% 2021: 16.24% 2022: 19.75% 2023: 11.43% (I don't include HSA contributions into these PSR calculations)

Why I Joined |
I use this site as a data point in our overall retirement plan. It's encouraging to see what others have built by my age. It makes me want to try harder. |
Best Financial Decision |
Locking in student loans and mortgages at historically low rates (this was more “luck” and less “decision”) Maxing out my 401k (although I just started in 2020) Starting a 529 for our child at birth |
Worst Financial Decision |
In no particular order: #1 (ab)using credit cards. #2 waiting until my 40’s to get serious about saving #3 day-trading $27,000 of 401k rollover down to zero when I was 28. #4 contributing small percentages to 401k/taking loans from 401k to pay down credit cards. |
Current Investing Strategy |
2022: Max out HSA + spouse/my 401k. End of year update: We did it! (mostly. We maxed as much as we could while eligible)
2023: Max out HSA + minimum 401k to get match + pay down HELOC since the interest rate crept up so much. End of year update: We failed to pay down HELOC by much due to unplanned expenses.
2024: Max out HSA + my 401k. Put in minimum on spouse's 401k to get match. Also max out 2 Roth IRAs (July update: 1 is maxed out!). This should put us around 21% Personal Savings Rate. (August update: furnace/AC failure just nixed our plan) |
How do you manage your finances? |
401k on autopilot: - 34% global/international (Vanguard index) - 19% small cap (Fidelity index) - 19% mid cap (Fidelity index) - 20% large cap (Fidelity index) - 5% global real estate (Vanguard index) - 3% energy (Vanguard index fund) (59/41 US/Global exposure)
RothIRA - 100% in VTI HSA - 100% in VFIAX (VANGUARD 500 INDEX ADMIRAL) |
